The Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance, today refused to answer questions about whether the Government’s Bus Rationalisation Program, which removed dozens of key stops throughout the inner west just a few months ago, was a ploy to privatise the bus service by stealth. 

1,200 public transport workers in the Inner West will be cut, according to Rail Tram and Bus Union of NSW estimates. These are the same workers who only six months ago were assured by the Government their jobs were safe for five years.

Safety is always compromised when we force rail providers to focus on commercial imperatives above their aim to provide safe, convenient and dependable transport options for all New South Wales citizens.

The rationale of the Bus Priority Program is flawed: There are more equitable ways to improve bus efficiency than making buses harder to catch, particularly for vulnerable members of our community who depend on public transport. 

Labor MP’s Sophie Cotsis (Canterbury) and Jo Haylen (Summer Hill) have written to NSW State Government ministers responsible for transport and roads, asking for an extension to the deadline for consultation on the “Bus rationalisation program.”

The Government plans to remove dozens of bus stops on key routes in the Inner West, including stops close to schools, childcare centres and nursing homes.

Member for Summer Hill, Jo Haylen, is demanding the NSW Transport Minister abandon plans to remove bus stops along key routes servicing the Inner West.

Projects delayed include sorely needed upgrades to Lewisham, Petersham and Dulwich Hill stations. Plans for commuter parking at Summer Hill and Marrickville stations are also delayed.
