Transport for NSW has awarded a design and construct contract to Degnan Pty Ltd to deliver a major accessibility and safety upgrade at Lewisham Station, as part of the NSW Government’s $800.7 million Safe Accessible Transport (SAT) program.
The SAT program is improving safety, accessibility, and amenity across the transport network, ensuring stations and interchanges meet modern accessibility standards and support independent travel for people of all ages and abilities.
The Lewisham Station Upgrade will deliver four new lifts, improved wayfinding, accessible parking and kiss and ride spaces, new platform hearing loops, and ground surface tactile indicators. The work will also deliver important safety improvements, such as upgraded lighting, resurfaced platforms, and additional CCTV.
Flood mitigation will be a key focus of the project, with measures to reduce water ingress and improve stormwater management in the station underpass, which has experienced repeated flooding during heavy rainfall.
With the contract now awarded, detailed design and site investigations will begin immediately at Lewisham Station and surrounding areas. This next stage will include interactive design workshops with key stakeholders, including Inner West Council.
Lewisham Station currently does not meet Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) requirements and is only accessible via stairs. Upgrading the station will ensure equitable access for all passengers, including people living with disabilities, older people, and parents or carers with prams and mobility aids.
Construction is expected to begin by late‑2026, following detailed design development. Work will take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete.
