I'm thrilled to welcome a fantastic new social enterprise cafe to Marrickville—SIT has just opened on Illawarra Road, and it's something really special. This 40-seat cafe is a collaborative project between the Baba's Place hospitality team of Jean-Paul El Tom, Alex Kelly, Joy-Della El Tom, James Bellos and Zaal Kaboli, not-for-profit Fresh Hope Communities, and Nightingale Housing. It's located in the street-level space of Nightingale's 54-apartment social housing block, bringing community together in the best possible way. The food is incredible and everything is thoughtfully prepared with seasonal ingredients and minimal intervention. However SIT is about more than great coffee and food. The space is deeply collaborative, featuring art from local creators, a yellow grandstand made from one tonne of recycled plastic diverted from landfill, and tables embedded with donated lace doilies. This is what social enterprise looks like‑thoughtful food, sustainable practices, community collaboration, and creating jobs while bringing people together. Welcome to Marrickville, SIT. We're so glad you're here!
