I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Ms Gladys Barnes. Gladys was an extraordinary member of our inner west community, President of the Pratten Park Bowlo and an icon of lawn bowls in NSW. Beloved by her Ashfield community Gladys was always there to greet you with a smile or serve you a drink from behind the bar and she will be missed by many. Not only a stalwart of the lawn bowls community, Gladys was also a founding member of Burwood's Sandakan Community Educational Committee. Gladys laid a wreath at the annual memorial each year in honour of her father who died as a prisoner of war during World War II. This tradition meant the world to her and reminded all of us of the sacrifices made by so many. Thank you, Gladys, for your lifelong dedication to your community, your passion and your kindness.
