I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Joy Lewis, a much-loved member of Marrickville Heritage Society.

Joy grew up in Marrickville, and attended Marrickville West Public School.

She became one of the top students at the Metropolitan College and a newspaper article in 1940 described her as ‘Sydney’s fastest typist’ and the only woman in Australia holding a diploma of speech therapy.

Joy’s proficiency as a typist was recognised in the Commonwealth Court Reporting Branch where she was held in high regard by colleagues and judges.

Joy was passionate about music, took lessons at the conservatorium, and was the organist for many years at Marrickville Church of Christ.

As an accomplished pianist, she accompanied former Metropolitan College student Joan Sutherland in recitals, long before she Joan became a household name.

Also a theatre lover, Joy immersed herself in dramatic art studies and joined Norman McVicker’s Pocket Playhouse in Sydenham where she acted, as well as working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Joy was a member of Marrickville Heritage Society for over 35 years.

Joy passed away aged 105, after living a full and exciting life.

Vale Joy Lewis.
