The recent passing of Mr John Butcher is a monumental loss for our community.

Formerly a Catholic priest in Redfern, John supported indigenous rights campaigns and other community activism until he left the church in the seventies.

Over the following decades of his life, he was dedicated to campaigning for peace, social justice, and the environment.

I first met John through his work as President of the Cook’s River Valley Association. John had a special affinity for the river, always championing its protection and rehabilitation. He also helped establish Marrickville Peace Park at Richardson’s, a beautiful spot overlooking the river.

Ongoing events such as Candles on the River and the Sorry Day Walk in Marrickville, are proof that while he’s no longer with us, John’s activism continues.

My thoughts are with John’s partner Julie, his son Ben, Ben's partner Sylvie, and his brother and sister Peter and Marie.

Thank you, John, for your lifelong work that has inspired so many local activists to continue your work today.
