Don Smith sadly passed away on 1 July 2021. Don worked for many years at the ABC, including as Head of Workplace Relations, and established the ABC's occupational health and safety unit. He was a stalwart of the Labor party, his commitment solidified on the day of the Dismissal where he was among the crowd gathered on the steps of Old Parliament House. Don was a proud advocate for human rights, public education, young people and the arts, serving for many years on the Board of the Bankstown Youth Development Service. He was President of both the Marrickville Youth Resource Centre and Ashbury Public School P&C. Don was a prolific poet. As "Angry of Ashfield," one of the "Pens of Fury" regularly appearing in the Sydney Morning Herald letters pages, one of his proudest achievements was appearing on the same letters page twice in one day. Don will be dearly missed by his long term partner, Trish Anderson. He was the beloved father of Samantha, Daniel (who sadly passed away in a car accident in 2001), Josh, Shelley, and Chloe, and grandfather to Coral, Maddy, and Dominic. A True Believer to the end - Vale Don Smith.
