For over fifty years, the Houlis family fruit shop has been a fixture of Marrickville life — and as it closes its doors, we pause to recognise an extraordinary milestone and say a heartfelt farewell. Since 1969, generations of Marrickville residents have passed through this much-loved shop, and in doing so have been part of a story that is woven into the very fabric of our community. Years of early mornings, long days and quiet dedication — the kind of commitment that only a family truly understands. The Houlis story is one of remarkable resilience. Frangoulis and his sons Nominos, John and Theophilos arrived in Australia with little, worked the cane fields of Innisfail, the vineyards of Mildura and the construction sites of Sydney before planting their roots in Marrickville and building something lasting. That something, a family business and a community institution, deserves to be celebrated and remembered.
