Jo Haylen, Member for Summer Hill, has condemned further plans to undermine TAFE as hundreds more TAFE teachers likely face the sack at the hands of the Berejiklian Liberal Government.

Treasury documents show that more than $53 million in TAFE redundancy and restructuring costs are expected this year.

Since the Government began its assault on TAFE, 5,700 teachers and support staff have been sacked, courses cut and fee hiked by around a quarter, resulting in 175,000 fewer enrolments.

TAFE campuses have been closed, including Petersham West Street campus and replaced by a new format, effectively a shopfront to replace bricks and mortar institutes.

$145 million was wasted on a new dud computer system that lost student fees and citations.

Opposition leader Luke Foley’s first stop on his week-long trip Schools and Hospitals Before Stadiums Tour was at a rally to save Padstow TAFE.

To the cheers of TAFE supporters he pledged a Labor Government will save the vocational training institution – now suffering under a savage ideological assault by the Berejiklian-Barilaro government.

Mr. Foley is spending the next week in the Schools and Hospitals Before Stadiums bus touring the state to oppose the Government’s $2.7 billion stadium splurge.

Quotes attributable to Jo Haylen MP Member for Summer Hill

“It is an indictment on this Government that the foundations of public education in this state come second to an ideological crusade.

“This is a Government more interested in vanity spending on stadiums than the education of young people in our community trying to learn and make a living.

"Enrolments at TAFE are in free-fall and this Government is squarely to blame. Spending $2.7 billion on stadiums has a real cost - you can see it on the faces of TAFE staff and young people trying to find a job."

Quotes attributable to Luke Foley MP NSW Opposition Leader

“TAFE has been an outstanding educational institution for more than 130 years yet this government has turned training for jobs into a wasteland. Only Labor will save TAFE.’

“We guarantee at least 70 per cent of all vocational education and training funding will go to TAFE.’

Quotes attributable to Prue Car MP Shadow Minister for Skills

“Business and industry in many sectors desperately needs trained and skilled staff but it can’t get them this way.

“The Liberals and Nationals just don’t get it. Enrolments are in freefall, course fees are going through the roof and yet this Government continues to slash our TAFE.”
