A new bus layover near Sydenham Station and Metro, designed to improve safety and connectivity, has officially opened.
Located at the corner of Burrows Avenue and Railway Road, the layover includes six dedicated bus parking spaces and brand-new driver amenities.
The layover will reduce the need for buses to park on local streets, easing congestion for all road users, as well as improve pedestrian safety and cater to the growing number of bus services in the area.
This will help enhance bus on time running by reducing empty bus movements, delays, and the need for buses to double-park on Railway Road and Burrows Avenue.
A dedicated driver’s amenity block, featuring a meal room and restrooms, has also been built, allowing bus drivers to take meal breaks, manage fatigue, and safely park buses between services.
Other features of the upgrade include:
- A new pedestrian walkway which provides a safe walking route to Sydenham Station from Railway Road
- Conversion in car parking spaces on the northern side of Railway Road from 8 parallel to 13 angled parking spaces
- New resurfacing and line marking on Railway Road and Burrows Avenue
- 3.5-metre-high noise wall between residential properties and the layover facility to reduce noise for residents, featuring artwork designed by an aboriginal artist
- Landscaping, including native trees, shrubs and grasses.
The project is funded through the Bus Priority Infrastructure Program, which enhances the reliability and efficiency of bus services through key infrastructure upgrades.

Jo Haylen MP Member for Summer Hill said:
“This layover has created room for 6 buses to safely park between routes, improved pedestrian pathways, and added new landscaping to make the area more welcoming for locals.
This space will also give our bus drivers a proper place to rest and recharge. The new amenity block includes a meal room and restrooms so drivers can take their breaks comfortably.
Together we are building a safer, more efficient, and more connected public transport system – one that keeps Sydney moving and supports the people who make it all possible. “
A spokesperson for Transport for NSW said:
"Sydenham will play an even more significant role with the opening of the Sydney Metro Southwest line next year, expanded Illawarra line train services, and the anticipated growth in population and bus demand around Sydenham Station.
"In order to create a seamless and efficient transportation system, it is crucial that the bus services complementing the train lines and Metro are the best they can be.”
