Tomorrow, across the Inner West, people will stop to remember the sacrifice and service of those who fought for our nation. Over 6,500 men enlisted in the First World War from Marrickville alone, which represented one tenth of the area's population at that time. 670 of them did not return. This is a story deeply felt by communities across the Inner West, and I am pleased that Remembrance Day events will be held at Loyalty Square, Balmain and at Petersham RSL memorial garden at 10:45am. Ashfield RSL held a service last week to commemorate local Ashfield residents who went to war. I know local residents will continue to leave flowers, as they do every year, at the memorials at Marrickville Town Hall and Ashfield Park, our school students will mark the occasion and learn more about this important history, and locals will take a moment of quiet reflection at the Haberfield First World War Roll of Honour at Haberfield Library. Together, we shall say: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. We will remember them.
