I was honoured to attend the opening of Jewish House's new meanwhile use development in Ashfield, an inspiring initiative supporting vulnerable people in our community. Meanwhile use developments transform temporarily vacant buildings into safe, functional spaces that serve urgent community needs, like crisis accommodation, until long-term redevelopment begins. Founded in 1983 by brothers Anthony and Roger Clifford, Jewish House has grown from a counselling centre into a comprehensive crisis support service. Today, under the leadership of CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel and Co-Presidents Roger Clifford OAM and Ron Hirsch, Jewish House offers compassionate, practical assistance to people facing housing insecurity, mental health challenges, and personal crises, regardless of background or belief. Their new Ashfield site exemplifies their innovative, holistic approach. By repurposing underutilised space, they are providing shelter, dignity, stability, and hope. This development reflects their mission to reduce the severity of crisis events by addressing root causes and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives. Thank you to Rabbi Mendel, Roger, Ron, and the entire Jewish House team, and to Housing All Australians, TOGA, and FDC for your collaboration and commitment. Together, you are creating real opportunities for people to rebuild with strength and support.
