I was recently honoured to visit the new Habilis housing project in my Summer Hill electorate. Habilis is a values-based initiative to provide serviced housing for the homeless. Habilis 1 in Summer Hill is the first project for the organisation. It is a purpose built complex of individual units that provides physical security and access to support services. Providing this type of housing aims to overcome the barriers to secure accommodation experienced by many people facing chronic homelessness. Not only providing shelter, also included are regular visits from a range of service providers on site, and assistance maintaining an independent lifestyle. Led by Olav Nielssen, a psychiatrist who has performed a weekly clinic at Matthew Talbot Hostel for the last seventeen years, the team at Habilis are providing a much-needed service for vulnerable people in our community. Congratulations Olav and all involved with this project and thank you. I wish you all the best for what is hopefully the first of many locations.
