Jo Haylen, Member for Summer Hill, has condemned efforts by the Baird Government to circumvent Marrickville Council’s decision to stop contractors accessing local roads to do preliminary work.

Ms Haylen seconded the Augustus motion to block access in her capacity as a Marrickville Councillor and has been a long-time critic of the project. Contractors have threatened to continue work under the auspices of the Roads and Maritime Services.

“This really shows the absolute arrogance of the Baird Government – they’re starting work even though the project doesn't have planning approval,” said Ms Haylen.

“It’s a slap in the face for the thousands of locals who wrote submissions opposing the new M5 and another kick in the guts for the inner west community which stands united against it.”

“We’ve seen nothing but secrecy and trickery from the Government and now they’re pushing ahead despite the objections of a democratically elected council - and clear community opposition,” Ms Haylen said.

“This is arrogance in the extreme.”
