Cricket Clubs across the country, including Inner West clubs, held a reconciliation round this past weekend, acknowledging and celebrating First Nations people. Clubs were encouraged to connect with traditional owners and organise a Welcome to Country, to acknowledge country prior to games, to connect with local Indigenous artists and paint their stumps, unveiling a plaque or sign to acknowledge land, or standing barefoot together as a sign of the team's continuing commitment to reconciliation. Clubs across the Inner West – including Marrickville Cricket Club, Summer Hill Cricket Club, and Western Suburbs District Cricket Club – all marked the occasion, with junior teams across the community taking efforts to express their commitment to reconciliation. These events were an important way for young players to learn more about the enduring connection and sovereignty of First Nations people to the lands on which they played, and also gave visibility and acknowledgement to First Nations kids on their teams. I warmly thanks and congratulate each of the local clubs who participated, offer my own acknowledgement to First Nations players in our local cricket teams, and thank Cricket Australia for this important initiative.
