Labor has asked the NSW Government to confirm what precautions have been taken to protect seniors during the pandemic.

Labor Shadow Minister for Health Ryan Park said: “We know COVID-19 is particularly dangerous to older people.

“As we see the number of cases here and south of the border continue to grow, the NSW Government must explain what measures it’s put in place to keep seniors safe from the virus.”

Labor Shadow Minister for Seniors Jo Haylen said: “We’ve already seen how a lack of Government preparation and accountability put seniors’ lives at risk. We do not want to see a repeat of Newmarch House.”

19 residents at the Newmarch House aged care facility died, with around 71 cases linked to the centre.

“There’s an easy way to put families at ease. Explain what steps have been taken to protect seniors,” Ms Haylen said.

“Explain what Personal Protective Equipment has been secured. Explain whether there’s additional screening available for residents’ families and workers at aged care facilities. Explain whether nearby Intensive Care Units will be used for residents who fall ill.”
