Marrickville continues to be a magnet for foodies with the opening of Baba's Place in a sprawling warehouse in Sloane Street. Co-owners Alexander Kelly and head chef Jean-Paul El Tom have won widespread praise and critical acclaim for their latest venture, which draws on the owners' Lebanese, Macedonian and Greek heritage but also expands to cuisines from cultures across the globe. Patrons are raving about the house-made labne, sous-vide octopus and Shanghai-style noodles. Baba's is envisioned as a slice of home, decorated with family heirlooms and items drawn from garage sales and op-shops across the Inner West. Baba's Place is situated in the burgeoning industrial area around Sydenham, complementing existing venues and businesses like Stix, Brickfields and Bourke Street Bakery, as well as a multitude of local food producers, breweries and distilleries. Marrickville's local food scene is clearly going from strength to strength. I warmly welcome and congratulate Alexander, Jean-Paul and the Baba's Place team and wish them every success.
