I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr Mat Murphy, a player with Ashfield Pirates FC, for his heroic act at a recent game. On May 20 during an Ashfield Pirates game at Rudd Park an opposition player collapsed suddenly and it appeared that his heart had stopped. Mr Murphy, an Inner West firefighter when he isn't playing for the Pirates, launched into action, working on the collapsed player for several minutes until the paramedics arrived. Mr. Murphy administered CPR and used the defibrillator paddles on the gentleman suffering the medical episode, managing to start his heart again before the paramedics arrived and the gentleman was taken to hospital. One of the teammates of the collapsed player later thanked Mr. Murphy for keeping a cool head and stepping in, saying that he believed Mr. Murphy had saved his teammate's life. Thank you so much Mat for your heroic life-saving actions, we all owe you a debt of gratitude!
