I was excited to recently visit the Ultimo Project and meet with Therese Kenyon an artist and curator. The Ultimo Project is one of the oldest artist collectives in Sydney and this year celebrates its 40th anniversary. It evolved out of the artists' space movements of the late nineteen seventies and early eighties where loose collectives of artists working with an initiative from the Artworkers Union aimed towards securing affordable housing and studio spaces for artists. Originally based in Ultimo the collective has been located at the Addison Road Community Centre since 2004. The aim of the Association since formation has remained primarily to function as a model studio, providing long-term, secure and affordable workspaces for member artists. The organisation currently has twenty fully occupied studios (some shared) with a long waiting list. Studio artists work across painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, multi-disciplinary research, experimental and time-based art. Congratulations Therese and all the artists and volunteers who have contributed to the sustained success of the Ultimo Project over so many years.
