Congratulations to the Infants' Home on achieving 150 years of operation this year. Established in 1874, The Infant's Home was the first institution dedicated to caring for abandoned children and providing accommodation for unmarried mothers and their babies. The Infant's Home was incorporated by an Act of NSW Parliament in 1924 and has grown from its initial controversial beginnings to the multi-faceted early childhood education operation of today. Initially located in Darlinghurst, Mr Thomas Walker, an early supporter and philanthropist, purchased a house in what was then rural Ashfield and gifted it to the charity. Key to continuing over such a long period has been The Infant's Home commitment to continuously improving and providing innovative services; over time adding kindergarten classes, long day care, family day care, speech pathology and occupational therapy for children with special needs. I am proud to have The Infant's Home in the Inner West, providing such critical services for children and families. Congratulations to current Board President Mary Verschuer, Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Robinson, and all the team for your ongoing dedication to championing the rights of children, women and families.
