I recently had the pleasure of visiting Rainbow Lodge to meet with President Annabel Mayo and Manager Claude Robinson. Rainbow Lodge is a residential support program for men to transition back into the community after their release from incarceration and has been operating since 1964. Men are supported by being given a home for 3 months, counselling, and an opportunity to re-engage with the community. This does come with the expectation of helping with household chores and sitting down to dinner together every night is mandatory! Rainbow Lodge also provides the invaluable Ngaramura ('See the Way' in Gadigal language) service that transports Aboriginal people from remand to residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres or, in some cases, to their families. Without the Ngaramura service, the clients would not be able to access treatment as courts are often reluctant to grant bail if there is no reliable transport available. Congratulations to Annabel, Claude and all the team at Rainbow Lodge who do such amazing, life-changing work.
