I wish to acknowledge the significant achievements of former Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club member Ms Margaret McLachlan, who in 1966 as a 21‑year‑old, had the cycling world at her feet, however the fact she regularly beat male riders deemed her too 'dangerous' a competitor. In 1966 Margaret's NSW Amateur Cycling Union (NSWACU) license was restricted. In 1967 she was given a full ban. In response Margaret switched her focus and talents to ultra-marathon feats. She completed four feats between 1966-68, setting records and being the first woman to complete a woman's hour record. Margaret invited the NSWACU to oversee each event. The NSWACU declined every time meaning Margaret's records were never formally recognised. Margaret was awarded an OAM for her contribution to women's cycling in 2000. She cofounded the sport cycling's NSW Women's Commission in 1980. Margaret's records have still not been formally recognised however her supporters continue to fight for recognition. Inner West Council recently recognised Margaret's achievements in cycling and in women's sport more broadly by unveiling a plaque at Marrickville Oval in her honour. Congratulations on your many amazing achievements Margaret!
