Jo Haylen MP, Member for Summer Hill, today welcomed the decision by the Inner West Council to cancel an event headlined by David “Avocado” Wolfe, a prominent anti-vaccine campaigner.
David Wolfe is currently on tour and had been scheduled to appear at the event on Saturday.
Council announced their intention to cancel the event after Ms Haylen wrote to the Administrator asking for the event to be reconsidered.
Quotes attributable to Jo Haylen MP
“Marrickville Town Hall is a public space maintained by council using ratepayers money so that community groups have somewhere affordable to meet and host local events.
“David Wolfe continues to spread falsehoods about vaccination which pose a direct threat to the health of our children.
“Council’s decision to cancel the event sends a strong message that the inner west won’t tolerate the kind of celebrity pseudo-science that puts our community at risk.
“The science around vaccination is clear. The risk to the community of failing to vaccinate is clear.
“This is about our public health.
“Recent cases of whooping cough and measles show just how dangerous failing to vaccinate our kids can be to the whole community. While I respect the right to free speech, I don’t believe that freedom extends to spreading messages that put others’ lives at risk.”
