Some of the most important community work happens not in boardrooms or council chambers, but around a table covered in fabric scraps, sequins and half-finished projects — and that is exactly where Ryder Spankie has been showing up, month after month. Crafty Queers was developed collaboratively by the Reverse Garbage team alongside local maker and volunteer facilitator Ryder Spankie, with leadership from Education Programs Developer Yasmin Andrews. Together they have built something genuinely special — a free, drop-in community crafting session that is as much about belonging as it is about making. Every session, people gather in the Education Hub to sew, mend, experiment with textiles and creative reuse, and connect in a warm, inclusive space where LGBTQIA+ community members and friends are welcomed with open arms. With no cost to participate and all materials provided, Crafty Queers reflects Reverse Garbage's commitment to ensuring creativity is open to everyone. The vibrant rainbow textile on display is as joyful and colourful as the community Ryder and Yasmin have so lovingly nurtured. Thank you both for the space you hold and the joy you create. Happy first birthday, Crafty Queers!
