Congratulations on achieving 50 years of service to our community to Allira's Place, the Aboriginal Women's and Children's Crisis Service. Initially opening in April 1976 as Marrickville Women's Refuge, this refuge was one of the first established in Australia and remains the only one to own its own large premises. Founded by a diverse collective of feminists; community workers, artists, local residents and university students, it was deeply embedded in the women's refuge movement. The refuge has evolved significantly over five decades. In 1997, it became Jean's Place, honouring much-loved former resident Jean Lennon, a reminder of why this work matters so deeply. In 2014, the service transformed into Aboriginal Women's & Children's Crisis Services, now known as Allira's Place, named in memory of Allira Green, a much-loved young Aboriginal woman, ensuring her story remains central to the service's purpose. Thank you to CEO Natasha Davies and the dedicated team who continue this vital work, focusing on healing-centred outcomes and safer futures for Aboriginal women and children. Congratulations on achieving this remarkable milestone - fifty years of courage, compassion and life-saving work.
