Historic day for Sydney as Metro comes alive under the city

Today marks a historic day in NSW transport history, as the doors officially open on new metro services extending from the city’s north-west at Chatswood, below the harbour and through the Sydney CBD, to Sydenham.

This morning commuters are waking to an additional 15.5-kilometres of new railway to get them around the busiest parts of the city, with access to fast and reliable services via six new underground stations and metro platforms at Central Station and Sydenham Station.

Work to improve train services for millions of passengers is being bolstered by the Minns Labor Government launching a Train Repair Plan following the successful completion of the Rail Repair Plan that has resulted in fewer incidents and more reliable journeys.

The final Sydney Trains Review has been released, outlining key challenges and recommendations, including major system upgrades, fleet reliability and workforce gaps.

The findings provide a framework for reform that will shape the future of our railways in New South Wales.

New and current bus drivers right across Sydney will be receiving their staff Opal cards from today.

Sydney Trains’ Rail Repair Plan has reached a key milestone three months ahead of schedule with more than 1,916 high-priority defects and over 29,000 defects in total repaired since the NSW Government launched the work.

The first new Australian built Parramatta River Class ferry has just arrived in Sydney after passing the ultimate sea test, crossing the Bass Strait.
