Question on Notice to the Minister for Family and Community Services, Minister for Social Housing and Minister for the Prevention  of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault regarding rape and domestic violence services.

That this House:

1. Notes the extraordinary work of Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia (RDVSA) which provides specialist sexual assault and domestic violence trauma counselling services for the national 1800 RESPECT line.

Jo Haylen MP, Member for Summer Hill, today expressed her ongoing support for the young women, activists and students fighting for action on the issue of sexual assault on campus, in light of the Australian Human Rights Commission report released yesterday.

The NSW Labor Opposition has pledged to work with all stakeholders to address the recommendations of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Change the Course: National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at Australian Universities.

Jo Haylen, Member for Summer Hill, today welcomed the Minister for Education’s acknowledgement of the toxic culture at residential university colleges and that the Government would review the Acts that govern them. 

Jo Haylen, Member for Summer Hill, is calling on the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, to add his voice to those calling for an end to the misogynistic culture of St Paul’s College and immediately move to review and update the governing Acts of all residential colleges to meet community expectations in 2017.

The Crimes Amendment (Intimate Images) Bill 2017 makes it an offence to, first, record an intimate image without consent; secondly, distribute such an image without the express consent of the person recorded; and, thirdly, threaten to record or distribute an intimate image without consent. 

The NSW Labor Opposition has welcomed announcements over the last two days by the Australian Human Rights Commission and Universities Australia about ending sexual assault on university campuses across Australia.

NSW Labor MPs have expressed outrage over the Australian Human Rights Commission decision not to publicly release data on individual universities, nor make recommendations as a result of a study into sexual assault on campus.
