LOVE WINS! A resounding victory for our LGBTIQ brothers and sisters, Australia took a significant step forward in terms of social justice and equality for all.

Residents across the inner west – and indeed across Australia – have started receiving their postal surveys on marriage equality.

That this House:

1. Notes the Commonwealth Government has committed to a national postal survey on marriage equality, risking the well-being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, and Questioning (LGBTIQ) communities across Australia.

Given the events of this week, this matter of public importance raised by the member for Sydney is particularly timely. It is appropriate that this House again put on the record its support for marriage equality. 

This year's theme "Love Makes a Family" focuses on the importance of celebrating family diversity. This year's events will also recognise the horrific abuse and murder of gay men in Chechnya.

A young LGBTI person is 14 times more likely to commit suicide. That is the enormity of the problem that faces us.
