Jo Haylen MP, Member for Summer Hill, today called on the community to defend the unique character of some of the inner west’s most iconic suburbs following the State Government’s release of the latest drafts of the Sydenham to Bankstown Corridor strategy. 

 I speak in debate on the Liquor Amendment (Reviews) Bill 2017. The bill legislates a number of reforms announced by the Government in relation to the review of the so-called lockout laws conducted by former High Court Justice Ian Callinan. As foreshadowed by the Minister for Lands and Forestry, and Minister for Racing this bill enacts those recommendations that were unable to be prescribed through regulation. 

Every afternoon, every lunch break, every weekend, a battle is played out on park benches, sporting fields and baby swings across the inner west. Open and green spaces are at a premium and every square metre of grass is accounted for. Residents using these spaces in a variety of ways crash into each other, sometimes quite literally. 

A Labor government led by Luke Foley will hand back valuable land to the community after it is discarded by the monolithic WestConnex roads project. More than 18 hectares- a little over the size of Hyde Park- is up for grabs and Labor has committed that the land along the M4 East corridor will not be sold to developers.

Jo Haylen, Member for Summer Hill, has welcomed NSW Labor’s announcement of a plan to protect heritage as a huge win for the irreplaceable conservation value of the Inner West.

We must endeavour to undertake coordinated and sustainable strategic planning and the District Plans provide a unique opportunity to action this goal. We have to get this planning right.

I would like to raise a number of objections to proposals for the exhaust stack depicted in the recently released Draft addendum to the M4 East Urban Design and Landscape Plan.
