Premier Gladys Berejiklian has broken her promise to ensure her federal Liberal colleagues honour the so called Gonski funding agreement, costing schools in Strathfield and Summer Hill thousands of dollars in funding.
The Federal Liberal Government will cut funding to almost every NSW public school, according to figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws released by the NSW Teachers Federation.
Under Ms Berejiklian’s watch the Federal Liberal Government is being allowed to slash more than $846 million, due to be delivered in 2018-19, from public schools right across NSW.
This is despite her promise in January to “make sure the federal government sticks to all of its commitments in relation to Gonski”.
The electorate of Strathfield will have a massive $7,314,177 wiped from the budget of its schools, while the electorate of Summer Hill is set to lose $5,160,841.
This includes $1,025,756 less for Strathfield South High School and over $500,000 less for both Summer Hill Public School and Ashfield Boys High School.
In NSW Parliament this week the Premier failed to say how she will make up this serious shortfall.
Now Premier Berejiklian must assure students, parents and teachers of Strathfield and Summer Hill that they won’t miss out as a result of this broken promise.
Quotes Attributable to Member for Strathfield
“How can the Premier praise the federal government for its education funding, when schools in Strathfield will be $7,314,177 worse off over the next two years?
“On her first day Ms Berejiklian said she was the ‘strongest supporter of Gonski’ – but it’s obvious she didn’t fight too hard for it.
Quotes Attributable to Member for Summer Hill,
“School kids and teachers are being thrown on the scrap heap at the same time as this Government is crowing about its commitment to Gonski and to public education.
“Today’s news will come as a blow to parents and P&C committees, who are often left to fund the gap in our public schools.
“This is not the kind of investment that our kids deserve.”
