Jo Haylen, the Member for Summer Hill, today welcomed the Baird Government’s decision to finally allow students to use their Opal cards and travel for free on the Inner West Light Rail, questioning the Government's delay.

“After years of campaigning, the Minister has finally made a decision that everyone in the community knows is common sense,” said Ms Haylen.

“This decision has been a long time coming, with the report sitting in the Minister's in-tray for over a year."

"In the meantime, parents have been paying for their kids to use the Light Rail and have been left in the dark,” said Ms Haylen.

Ms Haylen moved a motion in Parliament and circulated a petition over the past year calling for the change.

“The Inner West Light Rail extension is the safest, most direct way for many students to get to and from school,” Ms Haylen said.

“Parents will breathe a little easier knowing their kids can use the Light Rail.”

“This is a huge win for the students, P&C’s and parents in the Inner West who fought so hard to make it a reality, but people are rightly asking what took the Government so long.”
