Jo Haylen, the Member for Summer Hill, today welcomed news that the Australian National Audit Office will investigate the administration of Commonwealth funding for Westconnex.

Federal MP Anthony Albanese had called for the audit and Ms Haylen had asked for the Senate Economics References Committee to investigate whether allegations of corruption in Leighton Holdings offshore dealings had any bearing on Leighton’s involvement in Westconnex.

Westconnex is Australia’s largest infrastructure project, blowing out from $10 billion to $16.8 billion. The Baird Government has consistently shielded the project from public scrutiny.

NSW Labor has introduced Bills to create greater scrutiny around the project and Ms Haylen has strongly opposed the project from the beginning.

“While houses are being demolished in Haberfield and Ashfield, there are still serious concerns about the integrity of this project.

“The Abbott Government threw money at Westconnex before a business case was released and the Baird Government has done everything it can to block scrutiny.

“I fully support Jodi McKay’s call for the Baird Government to initiate a joint audit between the NSW Auditor and the Australian National Audit Office.

“Inner West residents deserve to know why this Government is tearing up our suburbs for a project no-one in the inner west wants.
